Brick Cheese Herb Havarti Swiss Gouda Smoked Gouda Caved Aged Gouda Cheese Curds Yellow Cheddar White Cheddar Mango Habanero Cajun Taco   Are you thinking about pairing your cheese with some wine? Cheese.com gives us some helpful tips on matching cheese with wine. A smooth, fatty cheese may go very well with a similarly smooth, slightly oily wine. Sweet wine contrasts very well with a cheese with high acidity. White wines go better with many cheeses than reds. Not all red wines match with cheese. The most recommended are the fruity, light red wines. Dry, fresh red wines are ideally suited to soft cheeses, especially goat ones. A wine with good acidity may be complemented by very salted cheeses. Dry champagnes are brilliant combination with bloomy white rinds. The cheeses can be matched with beer or cider....

Back to School – Vaccines, Meals, Snacks

Back to School – Vaccines, Meals, Snacks
Back to School – Vaccines, Meals, Snacks Dr.’s Corner Guest Blog from Edgerton Hospital – Milton Clinic By: Dr. Michael Schreiber Vaccines Vaccines are among the safest and most cost-effective ways to prevent disease. Protecting your children from preventable diseases will help keep them healthy and in school.      When a child comes down with a disease such as whooping cough, chickenpox or the flu, he or she may miss a lot of school while recovering – and somebody will need to stay home to provide care and make trips to the doctor.  If you haven’t already, check your child’s immunization record and schedule a visit to their physician or clinic. Doing so now will avoid a potential last minute rush and will help make sure there are no surprises on the first day of school. Most schools require children to be up to date on vaccinations before enrolling or starting school in order to protect the health of all students. If you are unsure of your state’s school immunization requirements, check with your child’s doctor, school, child care provider, college health center, or local health department. Vaccines are recommended throughout our lives. Young adults need vaccines too, especially...

Don’t Forget Sunscreen

Don’t Forget Sunscreen

Don’t Forget Sunscreen Dr.’s Corner Guest Blog from Edgerton Hospital – Milton Clinic By: Dr. Michael Schreiber July is UV Safety Month Sun, fun and spending time with family is what the summer season is all about. However, during this season of leisure and warm weather we need to consider the hidden danger that has the potential to quickly end the fun—sun damage. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 3.5 million cases of basal and squamous cell skin cancer are diagnosed each year, while more than 76,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest forms of skin cancer. Though the statistics are sobering, skin cancer actually is one of the most preventable forms of cancer. The American Cancer Society encourages people to take steps to help lower their risk of developing this disease.               Slip! Slop! Slap!® and Wrap The American Cancer Society’s awareness campaign for skin cancer prevention promotes the slogan “Slip! Slop! Slap! and Wrap” which is a catch phrase that reminds people of the 4 key ways they can protect themselves from UV radiation: Slip on a shirt Slop on sunscreen Slap on a hat Wrap on sunglasses to protect your...
The Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean Diet Dr.’s Corner Guest Blog from Edgerton Hospital – Milton Clinic By: Dr. Michael Schreiber Interested in trying the Mediterranean diet to improve your heart health? A recent study concludes closely following the Mediterranean diet can significantly lower your risk of heart disease.  The study was presented March 15 at the American College of Cardiology annual meeting in San Diego. Research presented at meetings should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal. The study included more than 2,500 Greek adults, aged 18 to 89, whose diets and health were tracked for 10 years. Nearly 20 percent of men and 12 percent of women in the study developed or died from heart disease. People who most closely followed a Mediterranean diet were 47 percent less likely to develop heart disease than those who did not closely follow the diet. The researchers also found that sticking to a Mediterranean diet was more protective against heart disease than physical activity. Previous studies have shown that a Mediterranean diet — which is high in fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, fish, and olive oil — is associated with weight loss, lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels, and a lower risk of diabetes and heart disease....
Springing into Healthy Eating

Springing into Healthy Eating

Springing into Healthy Eating Dr.’s Corner Guest Blog from Edgerton Hospital – Milton Clinic By: Dr. Michael Schreiber There’s no better time than spring to say “in with the new, out with the old.” And, I’m not talking about your wardrobe! If your eating habits are no longer working for you, go ahead and do a spring cleaning of your pantry and get yourself on the track to a healthy lifestyle. As the weather warms up, we spend more time outdoors – camping, jogging, biking, playing at the park. These are all great activities to keep your bodies moving and burn off calories, but planning what to eat may take the backburner to your activities. One way to combat this is to consider healthy foods that are quick and easy to prepare. At the Edgerton Hospital – Milton Clinic, we work closely with the hospital’s registered dietitian, Jenny Ludwig, to identify snacks and meals to prepare while you’re on the go. Some seasonal staples include asparagus, spinach, strawberries, sweet peas, artichokes, leeks, morel mushrooms, rhubarb and apricots. A quick fruit or salad will give your body the vitamins it needs to enjoy all of your outdoor adventures. Nuts, dried fruit, and energy bars offer instant energy for active individuals. Walking...

Foods To Help You Lose Weight

Foods To Help You Lose Weight

Foods To Help Weight Loss A lot of people make New Year’s Resolutions. The one resolution we always hear has to do with losing weight/getting healthy. Eating healthy is half the battle, however, it proves to be the hardest part. Health.com has a list of foods that help promote weightloss. Take a look! Best Superfoods for Weight Loss Black Beans A cup of black beans packs a whopping 15 grams of satisfying protein and doesn’t contain any of the saturated fat found in other protein sources, like red meat. Blueberries Best known for their anti-aging effects, blueberries, while tiny, are a powerful figure-friendly eat: A 1-cup serving sets you back only 80 calories, and helps you feel full with 4 grams of fiber. Avacados There’s no reason to be afraid of eating fats—as long as they’re the right fats. Oleic acid, a compound in avocados’ healthy monounsaturated fats (MUFAs), may trigger your body to actually quiet hunger. Stick to a quarter or a half of an avocado and watch that belly fat melt away. The creamy fruit is also packed with fiber and protein.
